The invention of Valentine’s Day
In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius started Valentine’s Day to honor a couple of Christian martyrs. Feb. 14 happened to fall during a pagan fertility festival. Fast-forward to now, and you’ve got Pajamagram telling us that the hoodie-footie is the perfect Valentine’s Day gift — there are a lot of bad Valentine’s Day ideas out there.
It’s a long story behind the holiday, but no one used to buy Valentine’s Day gifts until the 1980s, when a diamond retailer said people should. Thanks to Hallmark, jewelry companies, chocolate makers and florists, Valentine’s Day is a long-standing American obligation. If people enjoy having an excuse to do something romantic or show some extra love to family and friends, there is nothing wrong with that.

More bad Valentine’s Day ideas
Don’t get your significant other a Snuggie. They aren’t well built and leave fuzz everywhere. Men should also be warned kitchen appliances and other household items aren’t usually well received either. Unless you know your partner incredibly well, do something more romantic.
Going out to dinner without a reservation is also among bad Valentine’s Day ideas. If you haven’t made a reservation by now, you’d better start coming up with at-home menu ideas. Any place that you can walk into on Valentine’s Day without a reservation and get a table without waiting hours is probably not somewhere you should go for Valentine’s Day.
As far as good ideas for Valentine’s Day are concerned, it is a great reason to splurge for steak. Valentine’s Day, for me, is just about spending time together and doing something special, and eating steak at home is special enough for me.
